Muyinga is located in northeastern Burundi and is the capital of the province of the same name. With an elevation of about 1,750 meters, it is one of the highest cities in the country, resulting in a pleasant, cool climate. The region around Muyinga is geologically significant, as it is rich in mineral resources such as gold and cassiterite (tin stone), the mining of which is a vital pillar of the local economy. Historically, the city was a center for the spread of Christianity in the northeast, reflected in the founding of the Diocese of Muyinga in 1968. The surrounding area is characterized by hilly terrain intensively used for the cultivation of bananas, coffee, and beans. Nearby flows the Ruvubu River, which is part of the Nile basin and hosts diverse wildlife. Muyinga serves as an important hub for trade with neighboring Tanzania and Rwanda, giving the city a multicultural atmosphere.
