Lake Cohoha is a scenic lake located in northern Burundi, extending across the international border into Rwanda. It belongs to the group of northern Burundian lakes and is known for its distinct finger-like shape, formed by the flooding of ancient river valleys within the rift system. Covering an area of approximately 74 square kilometers, the majority of which lies within Burundi, the lake is a vital ecosystem for the relatively arid Kirundo region. Historically, the lake has been a primary source of fish for local communities, though in recent decades it has suffered from the effects of climate change and fluctuating water levels. The shoreline vegetation consists of reed beds and papyrus patches, providing a sanctuary for numerous water birds, including pelicans and herons. Geographically, the lake is characterized by its shallow depth and warm waters, which support a diverse aquatic biological community. Today, conservation measures are focused on preventing the lake from silting up and managing fish stocks sustainably for future generations.
