Ruvubu River

The Ruvubu River is the longest river entirely within Burundi and serves as the lifeblood of the country's largest protected area, Ruvubu National Park. Rising in the southern highlands, the river flows for approximately 300 kilometers in a northeasterly direction before merging with the Nyabarongo River to form the Kagera, a primary tributary of Lake Victoria and thus a key source of the Nile. The Ruvubu valley is defined by its wide meanders, flanked by extensive marshes and seasonal floodplains. Historically, the area's relative inaccessibility preserved a pristine savanna ecosystem that has largely disappeared elsewhere in Burundi due to agricultural expansion. The riverbanks support a magnificent array of wildlife, including large herds of Cape buffalo, hippopotamuses, and a vast number of water-dependent bird species. The river plays a crucial role in the regional ecology by regulating water flow and providing a sanctuary for the elusive sitatunga antelope. Today, the management of the Ruvubu watershed is a top priority for Burundi's environmental authorities to ensure sustainable biodiversity conservation.
