Lake Rwihinda Nature Reserve, situated in the Kirundo province of northern Burundi, is a crucial ecological haven. Often referred to simply as the 'Bird Lake' (Lac des Oiseaux), it spans an area of roughly 8,000 hectares. The lake and its surrounding wetlands provide a vital sanctuary for both resident and migratory avian species, including large colonies of cormorants, pelicans, and egrets. The central island of Akatwa is particularly dense with nesting birds during the breeding season. Small boats allow visitors to navigate the calm waters, offering excellent opportunities for photography and quiet observation. Beyond birdwatching, the serene environment provides a stark contrast to bustling cities, offering a tranquil retreat into nature. The best viewing conditions are from October to April when the migratory flocks are present.
