Ugljevik Thermal Power Plant (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Ugljevik power plant, officially known as RiTE Ugljevik, is a crucial component of the energy sector in the northeast of the Republika Srpska. It was commissioned in 1985 to convert the rich lignite deposits of the Majevica region into electrical energy. The most striking feature of the facility, which dominates the entire surrounding plain, is the chimney with a dizzying height of 310 meters - one of the tallest structures in the entire Balkans. This immense height was chosen to disperse the extremely high sulfur dioxide emissions, which occur during the combustion of the highly sulfurous local coal, over a larger area. In recent years, with Japanese financial support, significant investments have been made in a modern flue gas desulfurization plant in order to significantly reduce the catastrophic air pollution for which the plant was long notorious.
