Ali Pasha Mosque (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Ali Pasha Mosque in Sarajevo is widely regarded as one of the most aesthetically balanced examples of classical Ottoman architecture in the Balkans. It was constructed between 1560 and 1561 following the instructions of Hadum Ali Pasha, who requested the building of a mosque over his burial site before his death in 1557. The structure adheres to the principles of the Istanbul school of architecture, notable for its harmonious proportions. It features a single dome with a diameter of 9.40 meters, resting on a square base. The slender minaret stands 31 meters tall and is known for its elegant stonework. During the Siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s, the mosque suffered significant damage from shelling but was later meticulously restored under UNESCO's guidance. The surrounding courtyard contains a cemetery with historic tombstones and the mausoleum of Ali Pasha himself.
