Sokolac Timber Industry
The timber industry in Sokolac is the economic backbone of the Romanija region in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Due to the vast forest resources in the surrounding mountains, forestry and wood processing have a decades-old tradition here. Sokolac hosts several large sawmills and production facilities, including the formerly state-owned 'Nova Romanija' combine, which specializes in the manufacture of sawn timber, prefabricated houses, and wood pellets. Its geographical location on the Romanija plateau provides good climatic conditions for high-quality conifers such as spruce and fir, which are valued for their durability. In recent years, there has been an increase in investment in modern technologies for pellet production to enhance local value added and utilize sustainable energy sources. The industry secures a large portion of jobs in the municipality and is a major supplier for the construction industry both domestically and abroad. Despite global market fluctuations, the timber industry remains the stabilizing factor of the local economy.
