The settlement of Vlasenica is located in the eastern part of Republika Srpska and serves as the administrative center of the namesake municipality. The town is situated at the foot of Mount Javor at an elevation of over 600 meters, surrounded by dense forests. Historically, Vlasenica was a major stopping point on the ancient trade route between Sarajevo and Zvornik and was mentioned as early as the 15th century under the name Birče. During the Ottoman era, it developed into a significant administrative center for the Birač region. The modern economy of Vlasenica is primarily based on the timber industry and forestry, with the 'Finali' factory having long been a key employer. In the winter months, the region benefits from the nearby Igrišta ski resort, which attracts tourists. The town's architecture reflects influences from various eras, ranging from traditional Balkan styles to functional post-war buildings that characterize the current townscape.
