Han Pijesak is situated on the Romanija plateau in the eastern part of Republika Srpska at an average altitude of approximately 1,100 meters above sea level. The town is surrounded by dense coniferous forests, which provide it with a characteristic mountain climate and the status of a recognized air spa. Historically, the location gained significance through the summer residence of Yugoslav King Alexander I Karadjordjevic, built in the 1920s due to the healing properties of the local air. During World War II and later during the Bosnian War, the town's strategic position was of great importance for military operations in the region. Today, the local economy focuses primarily on forestry and industrial wood processing. The untouched nature of the surroundings also provides significant potential for eco-tourism and winter sports away from the crowds. Han Pijesak is considered one of the coldest inhabited areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with extremely long and snowy winters.
