Sokolac Fortress
Sokolac Fortress, imposingly situated on a limestone hill right at the gates of the city of Bihać, was a crucial link in the defensive system of northwestern Bosnia. Its strategic position allowed it to monitor and control access to the broad Una River valley. First mentioned in historical documents in 1380, the fortress was long owned by Croatian and Bosnian noble families before being captured by the Ottoman Empire in the late 16th century following repeated severe attacks. The most striking architectural feature of the ruins is the remarkably well-preserved cylindrical main tower, which, with its robust stonework and narrow embrasures, still dominates the valley. Following extensive archaeological investigations and restoration works in recent years, Sokolac has been saved from further decay. Today, the short hike up to the tower rewards visitors with a magnificent panoramic view over Bihać and the emerald-green waters of the Una River.
