Baraqish Ruins (Yemen)

Weather…

Baraqish, known in antiquity as Yathill, is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in Yemen. It served as the religious capital of the Minaean Kingdom, reaching its zenith in the 6th century BC. The city is enclosed by a massive stone wall, approximately 14 meters high, which remains almost entirely intact and features numerous inscriptions in the Old South Arabian script. Within these walls lie the ruins of several temples, most notably the temple dedicated to the god Nakrah. Strategically positioned on the Incense Route, Baraqish was a vital hub for the trade of precious resins between South Arabia and the Mediterranean world. The precision of the stonework and the monumentality of the structures testify to the high level of engineering skill possessed by the Minaeans. Although later inhabited by other cultures, the Minaean core remains the defining feature of the site. Today, Baraqish provides invaluable insights into pre-Islamic civilization and early urban planning on the Arabian Peninsula.
