Ostrožac Castle
Ostrožac Castle, situated majestically on a steep hill above the Una River near the town of Cazin, is an architectural masterpiece in northwestern Bosnia. What makes this fortification so unique is the fascinating blend of three completely different construction phases and stylistic eras. The original medieval castle was first mentioned in writing in 1286 and belonged to the Croatian Babonić princes. In the 16th century, it fell to the Ottoman Empire and was massively expanded into a heavily fortified base under the rule of the Beširević family. However, the complex underwent its most radical change at the beginning of the 20th century. The Habsburg Count Lothar von Berks purchased the castle and, in 1902, had a magnificent neo-Gothic style palace built within the old circular walls. Today, the extensive grounds are also known for their large sculpture park, which has housed over 300 outdoor stone artworks since the 1960s.
