Latin Bridge (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Latin Bridge in Sarajevo is a historic Ottoman structure that achieved global recognition due to its pivotal role in world history. The bridge, whose earliest written mention dates back to 1541, spans the Miljacka River, connecting the city center with its southern neighborhoods. Its current form, characterized by four distinct stone arches, was established in 1798 following extensive restoration work after severe floods had caused major damage. The location became world-famous on June 28, 1914, when the Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip assassinated the Austro-Hungarian heir apparent, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife Sophie at the northern end of the bridge. This tragic event ignited a fatal chain reaction that led to the outbreak of the First World War. During the Yugoslav era, the structure was known as Princip's Bridge, before reverting to its historical name in 1992. Today, the bridge remains a monument of immense significance, drawing countless tourists daily who come to stand at the exact spot where the historic shots were fired.
