Lukomir
Lukomir is a living ethnological museum in the Bjelašnica Mountains. Its inhabitants still live in a traditional manner in stone houses with steep shingle roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfall. The village is only accessible by road between May and October, as winter snow completely cuts it off from the outside world. Medieval stećci tombstones on the outskirts testify to the ancient settlement of this area. Visitors primarily come for the spectacular views of the 800-meter-deep Rakitnica Canyon and the authentic atmosphere. The local women are famous for their hand-knitted wool products, especially socks with traditional patterns. The hike from Umoljani to Lukomir is considered one of the most beautiful trekking routes in the country. Culinary offerings focus on simple shepherd dishes: fresh burek and pita baked over open fires. Since there are no hotels, visitors stay in simple guesthouses with local families. It is the excellent place to escape the digital world and experience the archaic rhythm of mountain life.
