Bjelašnica is a towering mountain massif southwest of Sarajevo and, at 2,067 meters, the highest of the city's Olympic mountains. It served as the prestigious venue for the men's alpine skiing events (downhill and giant slalom) during the 1984 Winter Olympics. The name 'Bjelašnica' is derived from the word for 'white,' reflecting the fact that snow often clings to its peaks well into early summer. The weather at the summit can be extreme, which is why it hosts a major meteorological station and observatory. The Bjelašnica ski resort is widely regarded as the most challenging in Bosnia and Herzegovina, attracting advanced skiers with its steep runs, though it has expanded to include beginner areas. Beyond skiing, the mountain is a premier destination for hiking and mountain biking. A unique cultural highlight is the nearby village of Lukomir, the highest and most isolated settlement in the country, where residents still live in traditional stone houses with wooden roofs and practice age-old customs. The rugged, almost mystical landscape of deep canyons and expansive plateaus provides an incomparable natural experience for adventurers.
