Kraljeva Sutjeska Monastery (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Franciscan monastery of Kraljeva Sutjeska, deeply hidden in an easy on the eye valley not far from Kakanj, is one of the most important spiritual and cultural centers for Bosnian Croats. Founded in the first half of the 14th century, near the summer residence of the Bosnian kings (Bobovac), it enjoyed the direct protection of the Kotromanić dynasty. The penultimate Bosnian Queen Catherine (Katarina Kosača-Kotromanić) is particularly venerated here; local women preserve her memory to this day by wearing traditional black folk costumes. Although the monastery has been destroyed multiple times by wars and fires over the centuries, it was always rebuilt, and its invaluable treasures were saved. The monastery library houses over 11,000 volumes, including 31 incunabula (books printed before 1500), making it one of the most valuable collections in the Balkans. Additionally, the associated museum is home to a rich collection of liturgical vestments, antique chalices, and old paintings that testify to the deep historical roots of the Franciscans in Bosnia.
