Bobovac Fortress (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The royal fortress of Bobovac was the paramount political and military center of the medieval Bosnian state. Constructed in the first half of the 14th century during the reign of Ban Stjepan II Kotromanić, the complex rests on a steep, highly inaccessible rocky plateau surrounded by the Mijakovo and Bukovica rivers. For more than a century, Bobovac served as the principal residence of Bosnian kings, the secure repository for the crown jewels, and the seat of the state archives. Its massive walls, up to 110 centimeters thick, combined with its strategic location, made the fortress virtually impregnable for a long time. However, in May 1463, following a brief but intense siege, the stronghold fell to the Ottoman forces led by Sultan Mehmed II, effectively sealing the fate of the independent Bosnian Kingdom. Within the fortress walls lies the royal burial chapel, where several Bosnian monarchs, including King Stjepan Ostoja and King Tvrtko II, were laid to rest, their remains later uncovered through archaeological excavations.
