Kamen Archaeological Site

The Kamen archaeological site near Rogatica is a significant witness to human settlement history that predates the Middle Ages. Excavations have revealed that the location was used as early as the Iron Age by Illyrian tribes who built the initial defensive works here. During the Roman era, the site likely functioned as a strategic observation post to monitor movements within the valleys of the Eastern Bosnian mountains. The strategic value of these limestone cliffs was later recognized by Bosnian bans and kings, who expanded upon the existing structures. Archaeologists have uncovered fragments of pottery, tools, and weaponry that point to thriving local craftsmanship and trade links with the Adriatic coast. Especially valuable are the artifacts from the transition period between the late Roman Empire and the early Middle Ages, proving continuous habitation. Research into the foundations also illustrates the evolution of construction techniques from dry-stone walling to complex fortifications using lime mortar.
