Kamen Fortress (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Kamen Fortress, also known as Borč, served as a primary residence for the Pavlović noble family in medieval Bosnia during the 14th and 15th centuries. Perched on a steep limestone ridge above the Prača River, the fortification strategically controlled the trade routes connecting the Drina Valley with the interior near modern-day Sarajevo. The complex featured an upper town with a fortified palace and a lower suburb (podgrađe) that housed merchants and artisans. Historical records from Ragusa (Dubrovnik) frequently mention the fortress as a major administrative hub where official charters were issued by Bosnian lords. Following the Ottoman conquest in 1463, the fortress gradually lost its military significance and was eventually abandoned to the elements. Today, the surviving remnants of its thick stone walls offer a glimpse into the architectural grandeur and defensive prowess of this mountain stronghold. Archaeological surveys have confirmed continuous habitation over several centuries, highlighting the site's role as a regional political power center.
