Stari Gaj Reserve
The Stari Gaj Reserve is located in the alluvial plains near Ilidža and Sarajevo, representing a significant example of a lowland floodplain forest. The area is characterized by high soil moisture and periodic flooding, favoring the establishment of tree species such as alder, ash, and pedunculate oak. This forest structure has become rare in the region, as many similar areas were drained for agriculture or urban development. Stari Gaj serves as a vital ecological corridor and filter for the underground watercourses that supply the capital with drinking water. The reserve's avifauna is particularly rich, with numerous migratory birds using the area as a resting stop. In recent years, measures have been taken to control invasive vegetation and preserve the forest's natural character. The reserve also provides important insights into the adaptation of ecosystems to changing hydrological conditions. It is a valuable location for the local population for nature observation and environmental education.
