Bijambare Protected Landscape
The Bijambare Protected Landscape is located in the northeastern part of the Sarajevo Canton, about 40 kilometers from the capital city. Spanning approximately 497 hectares, the area is renowned for its exceptional karst phenomena, most notably a complex of five caves. The most significant of these is the Great Bijambare Cave, which is about 420 meters long and consists of four massive halls rich in stalactites and stalagmites. The largest hall is frequently called the 'Music Hall' due to its superb acoustic properties. The surrounding landscape is dominated by dense pine forests and mountain meadows, ensuring high air quality. Archaeological evidence indicates that these caves were inhabited as early as the Paleolithic era. Since its official protection in 2003, the area has seen the development of sustainable tourism infrastructure, including an eco-train and well-marked hiking trails. Bijambare represents a key example of karst landscape conservation within the Dinaric Alps.
