Ilijaš is an emerging and highly industrialized municipality located in the extensive Bosna River valley, just a few kilometers north of the capital city, Sarajevo. For many decades, the city served as a central pillar of the Yugoslav metalworking industry; the massive iron and steel plant in Ilijaš totally dominated the local economy and attracted thousands of workers to the region. Although heavy industry suffered massive losses during the war in the 1990s, the municipality has successfully adapted to new economic conditions. Today, modern wood-processing facilities are growing rapidly, and agriculture is flourishing once again on the surrounding highly fertile fields. A striking contrast to its industrial character is the fascinating, untouched nature in the nearby mountains of Nišići and the heavily protected Bijambare nature reserve, which continuously attracts those seeking recreation from the entire Sarajevo metropolitan area.
