Sakteng

Sakteng is a sweeping valley in eastern Bhutan, closely associated with its neighboring village, Merak. Also inhabited by the semi-nomadic Brokpa community, Sakteng sits in a slightly wider and more fertile basin. The village is famously encompassed by the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, a vast protected area created in part to preserve the habitat of the legendary Yeti, or Migoi, a creature deeply woven into local folklore. The journey to Sakteng typically involves a multi-day trek through dense forests of rhododendrons and alpine meadows, offering spectacular scenery and opportunities for wildlife spotting. The village itself features traditional Bhutanese architecture adapted for the cold, and the locals are known for their warm hospitality and colorful traditional dress. Sakteng's economy relies on yak herding, bartering, and subsistence farming. The most good time to explore Sakteng is between September and November, or in the spring months when the rhododendrons are in full bloom. Because of its remote nature, infrastructure is basic, and visitors usually stay in community campsites or simple guesthouses, ensuring an authentic and culturally rich adventure.
