Drametse Lhakhang (Bhutan)

Weather…

Drametse Lhakhang is one of the most significant monasteries in eastern Bhutan, perched on a strategic ridge in the Mongar district. It was founded in the early 16th century, around 1511, by Ani Choten Zangmo, the granddaughter of the famous treasure discoverer Pema Lingpa. The name Drametse translates to 'the peak where there are no demons', indicating its spiritual sanctity. The monastery is globally renowned as the birthplace of the 'Nga Cham' (Drum Dance of Drametse), a sacred dance tradition that has been recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Legend states that the dance was revealed in a vision to Kuenga Gyeltshen, the founder's brother, and it remains a centerpiece of Bhutanese religious festivals today. The temple complex houses valuable statues and murals that preserve the Peling tradition of Himalayan Buddhism. Despite sustaining heavy damage during a 2009 earthquake, the site has been meticulously restored to its original glory. Drametse continues to serve as an active center for religious learning and a vital cultural hub for the local community, offering striking views of the Trashigang valley below.
