Kaptai Lake (Bangladesh)

Weather…

Kaptai Lake, located in the Rangamati District, is the largest man-made lake in Bangladesh, created in 1960 following the completion of the Kaptai Dam on the Karnaphuli River. While the primary purpose of the reservoir was hydroelectric power generation, it has since become a vital economic and ecological asset for the region. Spanning a catchment area of over 11,000 square kilometers, the lake supports a vast inland fishery and serves as a crucial transportation network for local communities. The lake's formation resulted in the flooding of roughly 220 square kilometers of arable land and the displacement of approximately 100,000 people, mostly from the Chakma community. Today, the lake is surrounded by scenic hills and is a major hub for both commercial fishing and tourism within the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
