Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary (Bhutan)

Weather…

Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 2003, is a unique 740-square-kilometer protected area in eastern Bhutan. It was created specifically to protect the 'Migoi,' the Bhutanese Yeti, whose existence is part of local folklore, although not scientifically proven. Beyond this peculiarity, the sanctuary protects a wide-open landscape of alpine meadows, temperate forests, and characteristic rhododendron forests. It is home to the semi-nomadic Brokpa people, whose unique culture and way of life are closely linked to their environment. The sanctuary also provides refuge for a variety of wildlife, including the red panda, snow leopard, and Himalayan black bear. A special feature of the flora is the blue poppy, Bhutan's national flower. The area was long inaccessible to foreigners, which has helped preserve its pristine nature and culture.
