Shillong
Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, is a beautiful hill station perched at an altitude of 1,496 meters. Often referred to as the 'Scotland of the East' due to its rolling hills and misty weather, it is a city of distinct character. Shillong is known for its animated music scene (often called the rock capital of India), trendy fashion sense, and the matrilineal culture of the indigenous Khasi people. Natural wonders surround the city, including the expansive Umiam Lake and the multi-tiered Elephant Falls. A trip to Shillong Peak provides panoramic views of the entire plateau. For foodies, the bustling Police Bazar is the place to try local Khasi delicacies like 'Jadoh' (meat and rice) and 'Doh Khlieh' (pork salad). The city also has a well-maintained golf course, one of the oldest in Asia, surrounded by majestic pine trees. Shillong is best reached by a 3-hour scenic drive from Guwahati, Assam. While Umroi airport is nearby, Guwahati remains the major gateway. The best time to visit is from September to May. During the monsoon months (June to August), the waterfalls are at their most powerful, and the region becomes the wettest place on earth, creating a lush, emerald-green paradise.
