Trashigang Valley (Bhutan)

Weather…

The Trashigang Valley, in the far east of Bhutan, is the region's largest and most populous valley. Historically, it was an important trade hub with Tibet. The town of Trashigang is situated on a steep slope above the Drangme Chhu river and is the animated center of eastern Bhutan. The Trashigang Dzong, built in 1659, majestically presides over the river gorge and once controlled the trade routes. The valley is characterized by terraced rice fields built on the steep slopes and subtropical forests. It is home to various ethnic groups, including the Tshanglas (Sharchop), who are considered the aboriginal inhabitants of eastern Bhutan. Nearby are important educational institutions like Sherubtse College, the country's oldest college. The valley is also a starting point for excursions to sacred sites like Gom Kora, a temple associated with Guru Rinpoche, and Sakteng National Park, known for its unique flora and fauna.
