Jaflong is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the Sylhet region, located on the banks of the Goyain River at the border of the Indian state of Meghalaya. The place is famous for its massive collection of stones and boulders brought down by the river from the Khasi hills. The crystal-clear water and the backdrop of lush green mountains on the Indian side make it a popular photographic spot. The local economy is heavily defined by manual stone collection, a daily activity for thousands of workers in the riverbed. Beyond the natural scenery, visitors can also learn about the lifestyle of the indigenous Khasi tribe, known for cultivating betel nuts in the adjacent forests. Their matriarchal social system and unique traditions add cultural depth to the visit. Jaflong is easily reachable from Sylhet city by bus or hired car, with the journey taking about two hours. The best time to visit is winter when the water is extremely clear and the river level is low. During the rainy season, the river becomes turbulent and prone to flash floods, but it also gives views of distant waterfalls on the Indian hills.
