Merak
Merak is a remote, high-altitude village located in the Trashigang district of eastern Bhutan, situated within the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary. It is the traditional home of the Brokpa people, a semi-nomadic community known for their unique culture, dialect, and distinctive clothing made from yak hair and sheep wool. For centuries, this valley remained isolated, preserving a way of life that revolves heavily around yak herding and high-altitude agriculture. Visiting Merak provides a rare glimpse into a lifestyle that has remained largely unchanged for generations. The landscape is characterized by rolling alpine pastures, rugged mountains, and small stone houses tightly clustered together to withstand the harsh winters. Travelers can interact with the friendly locals, learn about their nomadic traditions, and sample dairy products like fermented yak cheese. The region was only recently opened to tourism, making it an off-the-beaten-path destination. The best time to visit is during the warmer months from late spring to early autumn, as winter snows can make the mountain passes inaccessible. The annual Merak Tshechu is a particularly spirited time to experience local dances and festivities.
