Ratargul Swamp Forest

Ratargul Swamp Forest is a unique ecosystem in the Sylhet district and one of the few freshwater swamp forests in the world. During the monsoon season, the trees, primarily Koroch trees, are submerged up to their branches, creating a fascinating and somewhat surreal landscape. Tourists explore the forest in small, traditional wooden boats that glide silently through the dense vegetation. The wildlife in Ratargul is diverse, home to various species of snakes, monkeys, monitor lizards, and a multitude of birds like kingfishers and egrets. The dense canopy provides shelter for these animals, making the place a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers. In winter, the water recedes, revealing the damp forest floor which can then be explored on foot. The best time for a boat ride is during the monsoon, between July and September, when the forest is fully flooded. The journey from Sylhet is typically made by auto-rickshaw or jeep to the edge of the forest, where local boatmen take over. The silence of the forest, broken only by the chirping of birds, provides a profound nature experience.
