Paro Valley
The Paro Valley is one of Bhutan's widest, most fertile, and historically significant valleys. It is traversed by the Paro Chhu river and is home to the country's only international airport (PBH), the approach to which is considered one of the most challenging in the world. The valley is the heart of Bhutanese cultural heritage, home to some of the oldest monasteries and temples. Its most famous landmark is the Taktshang Monastery, also known as the Tiger's Nest, which clings dramatically to a steep cliffside at 3,120 meters. Another important structure is Rinpung Dzong, a 17th-century fortress that now serves as an administrative and monastic center. The National Museum of Bhutan, Ta Dzong, is also located in Paro, offering a comprehensive look into the country's rich culture and history. The valley's fertile soil allows for the cultivation of red rice, apples, and other vegetables.
