Ta Dzong (National Museum) (Bhutan)

Weather…

Ta Dzong in Paro is a unique architectural landmark, originally built in 1649 as a watchtower to protect the Rinpung Dzong below. Unlike most Bhutanese fortresses which are rectangular, this tower features a distinctive circular plan resembling a conch shell. In 1968, under the direction of the third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, Ta Dzong was converted into the National Museum of Bhutan. The museum houses an extraordinary collection of over 3,000 artifacts, including ancient thangkas, statues, ritual objects, traditional weaponry, and extensive numismatic and philatelic galleries. Following a significant earthquake in 2011, the tower underwent extensive renovations and was reopened in 2020 with modernized museum facilities. Its prominent location on a ridge features spectacular panoramic views of the entire Paro Valley. Ta Dzong plays a pivotal role in preserving Bhutanese heritage, providing visitors with deep insights into the kingdom's history, natural history, and diverse artistic traditions.
