Kyichu Lhakhang (Bhutan)

Weather…

Kyichu Lhakhang is one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bhutan, situated just outside the town of Paro. It was built in the 7th century, around 659 AD, by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. Legend has it that this is one of 108 temples built by the king in a single night to pin down a giant demoness who obstructed the spread of Buddhism across the Himalayas. Kyichu Lhakhang was intended to pin down the demoness's left knee. The complex consists of twin temples: the original 7th-century Jowo Lhakhang and the Guru Lhakhang, built in 1968 by the Queen Mother Ashi Kesang Choden Wangchuck. Inside, it houses a magnificent 7th-century statue of Jowo Jampa (Maitreya). The temple is a primary pilgrimage site and a place of deep spirituality, surrounded by prayer wheels and ancient orange trees that are said to bear fruit throughout the year. Kyichu Lhakhang is regarded as the birthplace of Buddhism in Bhutan and preserves an unparalleled historical atmosphere.
