Orval Abbey (Belgium)

Weather…

Orval Abbey, located in the Gaume region of southeastern Belgium, is one of the world's most significant Cistercian monasteries. Founded in 1070, it has a turbulent history of destruction and rebirth, with the current abbey rebuilt in the 20th century in a monumental Art Deco style. Orval is world-famous for its Trappist brewery, which has been producing its unique amber beer since 1931, making it one of the few authentic Trappist products globally. The ruins of the original medieval abbey, destroyed during the French Revolution, are preserved and open to visitors, offering a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into the past. According to legend, Countess Matilda of Tuscany lost her gold ring in a local spring, only for a trout to return it to her, an event commemorated in the abbey's logo. In addition to brewing, the monks produce traditional cheese and maintain a medicinal herb garden. The abbey continues to serve as a center for spirituality and silent retreat, drawing thousands of visitors each year.
