Binche is a characterful medieval city in the Walloon province of Hainaut, celebrated internationally for its spirited folklore and rich history. The undisputed highlight of the city is the Carnival of Binche, a deeply rooted, centuries-old festival that has been recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. On Shrove Tuesday, hundreds of "Gilles", men dressed in colorful, straw-stuffed costumes, wooden clogs, and large ostrich-feather hats, parade through the streets throwing oranges into the crowd. The city itself has exceptionally well preserved its medieval flair; it is the only city in Belgium whose historic 12th-century city walls, complete with watchtowers, are almost completely preserved. The International Museum of the Mask and Carnival in the heart of the city documents these fascinating traditions worldwide.
