Liège is the undisputed economic and cultural metropolis of Wallonia and the most important city on the Meuse River. Historically, the city was ruled for centuries by the powerful Prince-Bishopric of Liège, whose impressive Palace of the Prince-Bishops still dominates the cityscape today. In the 19th century, Liège developed into one of the first and largest centers of the Industrial Revolution on the European mainland, driven by coal mining and a thriving steel industry. Modern Liège is a city in transition, blending its industrial past with contemporary development, symbolized by the futuristic Liège-Guillemins railway station designed by architect Santiago Calatrava. The city is also known for its lively nightlife in the Le Carré district, the Sunday La Batte market along the banks of the Meuse, and the famous, sweet Liège waffles.
