Arlon (Arel) is the scenic capital of the Luxembourg province and shares with Tongeren the title of one of the oldest cities in Belgium. The city has deeply rooted Gallo-Roman origins; the Archaeological Museum of Arlon houses one of the richest collections of Roman artifacts in Europe, particularly an impressive variety of sculptured funerary monuments and reliefs that document ancient everyday life in detail. The cityscape is dominated by St. Donat's Church (Église Saint-Donat), perched on the Oron hill, from whose belvedere one has a magnificent panoramic view over the tri-border area (Belgium, France, Luxembourg). Arlon is also famous for its traditional "Maitrank," a sweet aperitif made from white wine infused with sweet woodruff. This historic city combines welcoming old town streets with deep historical significance.
