Tongeren (Tongres) in the province of Limburg has of being the oldest city in Belgium. Its origins date back to 15 BC, when the Romans founded the settlement "Atuatuca Tungrorum." This rich ancient past is omnipresent throughout the city, most impressively in the excellent Gallo-Roman Museum, which presents an extensive collection of archaeological finds from the region. A striking landmark of Tongeren is the statue of the Eburone king Ambiorix on the market square, who once inflicted a severe defeat on Julius Caesar. The Gothic Basilica of Our Lady, with its impressive treasury, dominates the city center. Another highlight is the 13th-century Beguinage. Today, Tongeren is also known worldwide for its Sunday antiques market, the largest in the Benelux countries, which attracts thousands of collectors and tourists every week.
