Louvain-la-Neuve is a planned city in the Belgian province of Walloon Brabant. It was founded in the early 1970s to house the French-speaking part of the Catholic University of Louvain (UCLouvain) following the university's linguistic split. The city's most remarkable feature is its pedestrian-only center. The entire downtown is built on a giant concrete slab, with vehicle traffic and parking located underneath. This creates a unique, quiet, and safe urban environment. The heart of the city is the university, which gives it an animated and youthful atmosphere. A cultural highlight is the Hergé Museum, dedicated to the creator of 'The Adventures of Tintin,' Georges Remi. The contemporary art museum (Musée L) is also worth a visit. The city is full of cafes, bars, and restaurants catering to the large student population. Green spaces and an artificial lake provide room for recreation. Louvain-la-Neuve is excellently connected by train, with direct services to Brussels (approx. 30 minutes). The best time to visit is during the academic year (September to June) to fully experience the city's spirited atmosphere. It's quieter in the summer but still a pleasant place for a day trip.
