Abbey of Orval (new) (Belgium)

Weather…

The new Abbey of Orval is an impressive example of 20th-century monastic renewal, built upon the foundations of the destroyed historical complex. Reconstruction began in 1926 following the initiative of the monk Marie-Albert van der Cruyssen and continued until 1948. The architect Henry Vaes designed the buildings in a unique style that harmoniously combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Art Deco elements. The centerpiece is the monumental abbey church with its striking facade and modern stained-glass windows. Today, the abbey houses an active community of Trappist monks known for their rigorous lifestyle and hospitality. Orval is world-famous for its brewery and cheese production, the proceeds of which support the maintenance of the abbey and various social projects. The entire complex is considered one of Belgium's architectural masterpieces from the interwar period.
