Nivelles (Nijvel) is a historic city in the province of Walloon Brabant, whose origins trace back to a 7th-century abbey founded by Saint Gertrude. The majestic Collegiate Church of Sainte-Gertrude, an architectural masterpiece in pure Romanesque style, still dominates the city center today. It is one of the oldest and largest Romanesque churches in Europe and houses impressive historical treasures in its crypt. Nivelles was an important religious and commercial center in the Middle Ages, as evidenced by the remains of the old city wall. The city is also nationally famous for a culinary specialty: the "Tarte al d'jote," a savory tart made from Swiss chard, fermented cheese (boulette), and butter, which has a tradition spanning over 800 years. The idyllic Parc de la Dodaine features a green lung close to the historic center.
