Novogrudok Castle (Belarus)

Weather…

The ruins of Novogrudok Castle sit imposingly on one of the highest hills in Belarus, testifying to the former greatness of the first capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The castle was founded in the 13th century by Grand Duke Mindaugas and was expanded over the centuries into a formidable fortress with seven massive towers and strong stone walls. It served as an important residence for the Lithuanian rulers and defended the heartland against enemy attacks by the Crusaders and Tatars. In the early 18th century, during the devastating Great Northern War, the fortress was severely destroyed by Swedish troops and was never rebuilt. Today, only the majestic remains of two brick towers still reach into the sky. The castle hill is not only a historically significant site but also gives a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding easy on the eye landscape and serves as a venue for popular medieval reenactment festivals.
