Lyakhavichy is a historically significant town in the Brest Region, most famous for its former state-of-the-art fortress. First mentioned in 1492, the town became a major military stronghold in the 16th century when magnate Jan Hieronymus Chodkiewicz commissioned one of Europe's most advanced defensive structures. During the Russo-Polish War in 1660, the fortress successfully withstood a massive siege by superior Russian forces, earning it the nickname 'the Belarusian Marienburg.' While only remnants of the earthen ramparts and moats remain today, the town's heritage is preserved in the Church of St. Joseph and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Lyakhavichy is located on the Vedzma River and has evolved into a center for the food industry, particularly dairy and canning production. The local community maintains a strong connection to its martial history, with monuments and museum exhibits dedicated to the legendary defense of the Lyakhavichy castle.
