The city was founded only in the late 19th century as a direct consequence of the construction of the strategic Vilnius-Luninyets railway line. Surrounded by the dense, partially swampy forests typical of the Polesia region, Hantsavichy quickly developed into a vital center for timber extraction and wood processing. A distinctly modern and imposing landmark near the city is the 'Volga' radar station, a massive military early-warning facility operated by the Russian Armed Forces.
