Lida Castle, erected by order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas in 1323, is a remarkable medieval fortress in Belarus. It was built as part of a massive defensive line designed to protect the lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the devastating raids of the Teutonic Knights. The square-plan brick castle, situated on an artificial sand hill between the Lideya and Kamenka rivers, is distinguished by its immense walls, reaching up to twelve meters in height, and two diagonally opposed defensive towers. The fortress withstood numerous sieges, including one by Crimean Tatar troops in 1506, but gradually fell into ruin starting in the 18th century. Thanks to extensive restoration work in the 21st century, the structure now shines in renewed glory and frequently serves as a venue for spirited knight festivals and historical markets.
