The Lida Plain in western Belarus is centrally located within the large basin of the Neman (Nioman) River, surrounding its historic namesake city of Lida. The terrain predominantly lies at an elevation of 150 to 200 meters and is characterized by a gently undulating topography. Geomorphologically, the plain owes its formation to the ground moraines of the penultimate Saalian (Sozh) glaciation. Because these moraines have been subjected to intense weathering and erosional processes for well over 100,000 years, they are now heavily flattened and smoothed out. The subsoil consists of a mixture of glacial sand and gravel deposits, which are frequently blanketed by fertile loamy topsoils. These favorable agrarian conditions make the Lida Plain an important agricultural hub. Consequently, the landscape is defined by a patchwork of extensive arable fields and pastures, which are continually interspersed with island-like patches of dense coniferous and mixed forests, as well as small, incised river valleys.
