The Great Synagogue of Lida was once a monumental centerpiece of Jewish life in Belarus and a symbol of the city's rich cultural diversity. Built in the late 19th century to replace an earlier wooden structure, the masonry synagogue was characterized by its impressive scale and distinct architectural features. Lida was a major center for Jewish learning, particularly famous for the Lida Yeshiva founded by Rabbi Reines, which attracted students from across the region. The synagogue served as the primary place of worship and social assembly for a community that comprised over 50% of the town's population. Following the Nazi invasion in 1941, the building was severely damaged during the early stages of the occupation and eventually razed to the ground. Today, only a commemorative marker stands at the original site, serving as a solemn reminder of the spirited community lost during the Holocaust. The legacy of the Lida Synagogue remains integral to the city's historical narrative and its ongoing efforts to preserve the memory of its multicultural past.
