The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Muravanka is a fascinating masterpiece of 16th-century sacral defense architecture. Constructed between 1516 and 1542, this rare architectural jewel harmoniously blends the spiritual functions of a place of worship with the robust attributes of an almost impregnable military fortress. The most striking feature of the red brick building is its four sturdy, round corner towers, which are heavily equipped with multiple tiers of embrasures (loopholes). The exceptionally thick walls of the church were specifically designed to withstand artillery fire, a feature that saved the structure from destruction by Swedish and Russian forces over the centuries. Inside, the church contrasts its harsh exterior with delicate stellar vaults, making it an outstanding example of Belarusian Gothic architecture mixed with early Renaissance elements.
