  • Plan visits to the Shahdag Mountain Resort in advance; it is the hub for skiers in winter, while summer has quieter hikes.

  • Try to learn a few words in Lezgian, as this region has a strong Lezgin culture; locals will appreciate the effort.
  • Minibuses (marshrutkas) to mountain villages like Laza often do not leave until they are completely full. Bring some patience.

Qusar lies in the far north-east of Azerbaijan at the foot of the majestic Mount Shahdag (4243 m) and is known as the country's northern gateway. The town has around forty thousand inhabitants, mostly belonging to the Lezgin ethnic group, who preserve their own language and culture vividly. Qusar is today the most important winter sports centre in Azerbaijan: Shahdag Mountain Resort, opened in 2013, has more than twenty pistes, modern cable cars and a mountain hotel at altitudes between fourteen hundred and twenty-three hundred metres. In summer, hikes through dense mountain forests, the Laza and Suvar waterfalls and the nearby Shahdag National Park, with a hundred and thirty thousand hectares the country's largest protected area, attract visitors. In the town itself, the Lezgin cultural house and the central bazaar are popular meeting points.
